ZrO2-TiO2 thin films: a new material system for mid-infrared integrated photonics
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mid-infrared (MIR, 2 6 μm wavelength) transparent metal oxides are attractive materials for planar integrated MIR photonic devices and sensing applications. In this report, we present reactive sputtering deposited ZrO2-TiO2 (ZTO) thin films as a new material candidate for integrated MIR photonics. The material structure and optical properties were systematically studied as a function of Ti concentration. The thin film index of refraction monotonically increases with Ti concentration, while the film crystallinity decreases. Fully amorphous ZTO films were achieved with 40 at.% Ti doping on various substrates. MIR micro-disk resonators on MgO substrates were demonstrated using Zr0.6Ti0.4O2 strip-loaded waveguides with a loaded quality factor of ~11,000 at 5.2 μm wavelength. ©2013 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (160.2750) Glass and other amorphous materials; (310.3840) Materials and process characterization; (240.0310) Thin films; (140.4780) Optical resonators References and links 1. Heterogeneous integration techniques, such as direct bonding, have enabled solutions to many problems facing integrated photonics. In particular, the relatively new field of mid-infrared (mid-IR) integrated photonics has been hindered by the availability of functional, transparent substrates in this wavelength range. The key to achieving compact, high-performance optical modulation and frequenc...

We report Hf1-xTixO2 (0< = x< = 1) thin films (HTO) as index tunable and highly transparent materials for ultraviolet to near infrared integrated photonic devices. By varying the Ti concentration, reactive cosputtered HTO thin films on thermal oxidized SiO2 on Si substrates show continuously tunable optical band gaps from 3.9 eV to larger than 5 eV. The film refractive index monotonically incre...
متن کاملSilicon-on-nitride waveguides for mid- and near-infrared integrated photonics
Silicon-on-nitride ridge waveguides are demonstrated and characterized at midand near-infrared optical wavelengths. Silicon-on-nitride thin films were achieved by bonding a silicon handling die to a silicon-on-insulator die coated with a low-stress silicon nitride layer. Subsequent removal of the silicon-on-insulator substrate results in a thin film of silicon on a nitride bottom cladding, read...

Binary oxide semiconductors TiO2-ZrO2 and Cu-decorated TiO2-ZrO2 (TiO2-ZrO2-Cu) uniform films were sputtered on polyester (PES). These films were irradiated under low intensity solar simulated light and led to bacterial inactivation in aerobic and anaerobic media as evaluated by CFU-plate counting. But bacterial mineralization was only induced by TiO2-ZrO2-Cu in aerobic media. The highly oxidat...

Sol-gel processing of TiO2, ZrO2 and mixed Ti/Zr oxide thin films has been studied as application of these coatings in electrochromic devices. Electrochromic behavior of the three kind materials was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and the basic electrochromic characteristics wer...
